At Cruise Collective, we’re passionate about bringing you closer to nature. And when it comes to seabird spotting, there’s arguably no better place to do it than from the deck of a cruise ship; unique perspectives of the UK’s coastline don’t get much more spectacular than this. So join us as we embark on a journey around the British Isles spying some of the most majestic seabirds in their natural habitat along the way. More than a cruise, this voyage is an extraordinary adventure for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Beginning our voyage in Newcastle’s industrial Port of Tyne, we first head northward, crossing the Scottish border towards the Shetland Islands. As we glide through serene waters along some of Scotland’s most rural eastern coastline be on the lookout for impressive Northern Gannets. Known for their spectacular diving abilities, these seabirds plunge into the sea from heights of up to 40 metres, piercing the water like arrows in pursuit of fish. Their striking white plumage and black-tipped wings make them a sight to behold against the backdrop of the ocean.
Next we call at the port of Lerwick, Shetland’s only town with a population of just over 7000 people. Here we get a glimpse of rural life in Scotland on a short stop before continuing to wind our way through these rugged, unspoiled islands. Here we witness charming Puffins, often called the "clowns of the sea" thanks to their colourful beaks and playful antics. These delightful birds nest in burrows on cliff tops, and with a bit of patience and luck, you might catch a glimpse of them carrying small fish back to their young. Puffins are a favourite among birdwatchers, and their presence will no doubt bring a smile to even the most reluctant of twitchers.
Our next stops include some of the inner Shetland Islands most arresting vistas including views of The Old Man Of Hoy and The Needle; both of these stunning cliffside formations are home to a variety of feathered friends. Marvel at the sight of Guillemots and Razorbills perched on the rugged cliffs, their sleek black and white bodies standing in stark contrast to the craggy rocks. These birds are adept swimmers and can often be seen diving for fish. Guillemots are known for their communal nesting habits, creating bustling colonies that are a hive of activity during the breeding season. Keep an eye out for the elegant Kittiwakes, which are smaller than other gulls but just as captivating. Their distinctive call echoes along the cliffs, and their graceful flight patterns are mesmerising to watch. Kittiwakes build their nests on narrow ledges, showcasing their incredible adaptability and survival skills.
As we continue on our journey towards Scotland’s west coast (considered by many to be the most beautiful part of the country) there are calls at Loch Hourn, Bac Mòr and Fingal’s Cave, all of which are home to a host of fabulous seabirds. And as you keep your eyes peeled, Fred. Olsen’s onboard naturalists provide fascinating insights into the lives and behaviours of these remarkable creatures. They share expert tips on the best times and places to spot different species, making every moment an opportunity for discovery. From the expansive decks, enjoy unobstructed views of these feathered wonders, and capture stunning photographs to cherish.
Finally, our voyage takes an about-turn to head back northward on a more circuitous route through the Shetlands and back down the east coast to where we began. This gives us the chance to enjoy some of the larger seabird colonies on the islands and coast including the enormous Great Skua, or Bonxie. Known for their aggressive nature, Great Skuas are the pirates of the bird world, often seen harassing other birds to steal their catches. Despite their fierce reputation, they play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem and are fascinating to observe in action.
We believe in fostering a deep connection with nature through travel, and this cruise offers just that. The British Isles are home to some of the most diverse and abundant seabird colonies in the world, and we take pride in providing an experience that brings you up close to this avian spectacle. As we sail through these fauna-rich waters, you’ll also have the chance to learn about the conservation efforts in place to protect these incredible species and their habitats.
