History buffs, rejoice! Europe’s rivers, seas, and coastlines offer the perfect way to sample some of the continent's fascinating history, having carried traders, emperors, and, even the occasional marauding Viking over the past several thousand years. Today, they offer something a little less dangerous but no less thrilling: a chance to retrace the footsteps of the past, one port at a time. And fear not, these itineraries still leave plenty of time for a gelato or glass of wine between the lessons in antiquity.

The Mediterranean sea is practically dripping with history—and olive oil. Begin your journey in Rome, where each cobblestone has a story to tell, from the gladiatorial spectacles of the Colosseum to the whispered intrigue of the Forum. Cruise eastward to Athens, where the Parthenon still reigns supreme despite centuries of wars, religious reforms and, more recently, assaults by countless marauding tourists.
Further afield, Turkey’s Ephesus beckons with its ancient Library of Celsus and remarkably intact Roman amphitheater. Wander through the same streets Cleopatra and Mark Antony may have strolled, (perhaps bickering about whose empire was bigger).
For something a little spicier, dock in Valletta, Malta, and uncover tales of the Knights of St. John, who defended this sun-kissed island from, well, just about everyone. The combination of stunning baroque architecture and dramatic history makes it a highlight for any historically inclined cruiser.

The Baltic Sea offers a veritable buffet of historical delights, served with a side of cool winds and warm cinnamon buns (depending on the time of year you set sail). Head towards Copenhagen, where Viking history collides with Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. Explore the National Museum’s treasure trove of longships and artefacts before grabbing a pastry (nothing says “Viking” quite like a flaky Danish on a chilly spring morning).
Tallinn, Estonia, is a medieval gem with its walled Old Town, cobblestone streets, and a skyline that looks as though it's been plucked from a Game of Thrones set. Further along, Stockholm’s Vasa Museum houses an actual 17th-century vessel salvaged from the seabed—and even if you aren't awed by the scale of this historic Swedish warship, it'll hard not to be impressed by how far shipbuilding has come when you return to the comfort of your centrally heated cabin.
For Russian history enthusiasts—without the Russian stop—Riga, Latvia, and Helsinki, Finland, offer tsarist-era grandeur and echoes of Cold War intrigue. Who knew history could come with such excellent sauna options?

If the Mediterranean and Baltic offer sweeping historical panoramas, Europe’s rivers provide an intimate look at the past. The Rhine River winds through storybook towns and castles that once served as toll stations. Stop in Heidelberg for its hauntingly beautiful castle ruins and a dash of literary history courtesy of Goethe.
The Danube River takes you through the heart of Central Europe. Vienna delivers a symphony of wedding-cake imperial grandeur with its palaces and coffeehouses, while Budapest’s Buda Castle offers panoramic views and tales of conquest. In Passau, Germany, you can explore one of the most beautiful baroque old towns in Europe, perched at the confluence of three rivers. Bonus points if you can name them all without Google.

History buffs shouldn’t miss a cruise around the English South Coast and Northern France, where every port is steeped in tales of battles, kings, and a little light smuggling. Start in Portsmouth, home to HMS Victory and a naval history that’s as robust as the local ale.
Make your way to Normandy, France, where the D-Day beaches stand as a poignant reminder of World War II’s greatest sacrifice. For medieval drama, Rouen is the place where Joan of Arc was tried and burned at the stake—a grim yet fascinating chapter in European history.
Further along the Channel, Bruges offers canals, chocolate, and a wealth of medieval and Renaissance history. It’s practically impossible not to feel like you’ve stepped into a history book (or at least a particularly charming historical drama).
