Antarctica is one of Earth’s last true wildernesses – an epic realm of pristine, frozen landscapes. Beyond its breathtaking beauty, this extraordinary continent drives our planet’s climate and ocean currents, while harbouring incredible wildlife that isn’t found anywhere else in the world.

An HX cruise is the perfect way to experience this magical world. Crossing the legendary Drake Passage, we follow the paths of some of history’s boldest explorers in the comfort of our modern expedition ships. Nothing prepares you for Antarctica’s majesty: immense icebergs, ancient glaciers and snow-capped mountains. And excursions are designed to immerse you even further, whether it’s kayaking through ice packs, snowshoeing across the tundra or ice-cruising alongside seals, whales and penguins.

Antarctic wonders

All of this is an incredible experience in itself, but our cruises offer even more. When you step aboard an HX expedition, you become part of something much bigger. Our ships double as floating research stations, where scientists from across the globe work to support groundbreaking research. And they don’t just do this behind closed doors: you’ll often get to see them live in action – perhaps preparing samples, analysing footage – or sharing their discoveries. Guests can sometimes even help with collecting samples or deploying instruments for their projects.

Scientific research on a HX Antarctica expedition

When this isn’t possible, guests can contribute to real-time research through one of the citizen science projects we proudly support. They’re guided by our Expedition Team – experts in their field who share their passions through lectures and hands-on science sessions. These take place both up on deck and in our state-of-the-art science centre, which is kitted out with microscopes, samples and fascinating collections.

Whether it’s helping to push the frontiers of science or simply soaking up the knowledge, guests can get involved as much or as little as they like. But one thing’s certain: new, unexpected things awaken the curious child in everyone. Our guests return home not only with incredible photographs and memories, but a deeper understanding of this remarkable continent and a passion for protecting it. It’s impossible not to come away touched by its sheer beauty. Seeing is believing… it’s an old cliché, but in this case it really is true!
