“It’s amazing to see the majestic landscapes and wildlife of Greenland, but even better when you learn about them. You see everything in a new way, when you understand what you see.
“In the Expedition Team, we have scientists, historians, storytellers, activity guides, interpreters, photographer and local cultural interpreters – a mine of information that covers every interest. It’s especially rewarding to have local team members onboard – the insight into daily life in Greenland, in addition to their knowledge of history and culture, adds so much to a trip. It becomes an experience of involvement in Greenland, not just a visit to see it. In fact, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is when I hear from guests how they’ve changed the way they think about what they see because of the knowledge they’ve acquired along the way.”

“During a Greenland itinerary, we have some ‘sea days’, where we focus on lectures, science sessions, art workshops and information briefings about what’s coming up in the trip. On other days, we might have a community visit or exploration day, which involves activities such as a nature landing, when we take guests ashore to see beautiful scenery, historical sights and we might see wildlife. Or we go cruising with the expedition boats to look at fjords, icebergs, glaciers and more.
On those days, I start the morning with a coffee out on deck to enjoy the best office view in the world. I get a look and feel of the conditions, then go to the bridge to get the latest update on timings, conditions and position and see if the operational plan needs adjusting. Then we get ready to explore…”

“Every stop or location in Greenland has something special to offer. The welcoming community of Qaqortoq, where icebergs often flow by the entrance to the port. Here, guests can visit a family and join the traditional kaffemik (Greenlandic for ‘via coffee’) or take the boat trip to see the historical site Hvalsø Church Ruins nearby. Then there’s Ilulissat, with its breathtaking Icefjord.
“A big joy of this job is that no day is the same. And our guests have that same joy, too.”
