Cruise ship launches have reached the point where “new ship” can mean almost anything.
In 2027, it could mean a 250,800-gross-tonne floating city with 28 places to eat, a 94-passenger yacht with 47 suites, Celebrity's first river ships or an 80-guest vessel built specifically for the Brahmaputra.
There are new classes from Oceania and Celebrity, another Icon Class giant from Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line's biggest ship yet and enough new river vessels to make Europe's waterways noticeably busier.
Here are the new cruise ships currently scheduled to debut in 2027, and what we know about them so far.
AmaRudi, AmaWaterways
Launching: April 2027
AmaWaterways is going large by river-cruise standards with AmaRudi, which will debut on the Danube in spring 2027.
Inspired by the design of of the double-width AmaMagna, it will accommodate 196 guests in 98 cabins and suites and is set to become the largest river cruise vessel in Europe. Multiple restaurants, wellness facilities and public spaces inspired by destinations along the Danube are promised.
Large is, of course, relative. Nobody aboard will need a map to find breakfast.
EXPLORA IV, Explora Journeys
Launching: April 2027
Explora Journeys continues its rapid expansion with EXPLORA IV, the fourth ship in MSC Group's luxury fleet.
It will have 463 ocean-front suites, five pools, six restaurants and 12 bars, with an eight-night maiden voyage from Genoa to Lisbon calling at destinations around the Mediterranean.
A fifth ship follows before the year is out, apparently four ships is too restrained.
Amangati, Aman at Sea
Launching: May 2027
One of 2027's most intriguing newcomers is also among its smallest.
Amangati will be the first vessel from Aman at Sea, extending the hotel group's particularly expensive interpretation of serenity onto the water.
Just 94 guests will be accommodated across 47 suites, each with its own terrace. Plans include several restaurants, extensive outdoor deck space and a large spa.
There will be cruise ships launching in 2027 carrying roughly 60 times as many people.
Presumably Amangati won't have much trouble finding you a lounger.
Carnival Festivale, Carnival Cruise Line
Launching: May 2027
At the other end of the scale is Carnival Festivale.
Carnival's fourth Excel Class ship will weigh around 180,000 gross tonnes and accommodate up to 6,400 guests. Two new onboard zones will be dedicated to music, while Sunsation Point will bring together a water park, sports courts and other family facilities.
Families are particularly central to the design. Around 1,000 cabins will be interconnecting, nearly 70% more than on Carnival's existing Excel Class ships.
Anyone who has previously attempted to coordinate grandparents, cousins and three children across six cabins may now briefly applaud.
Norwegian Aura, Norwegian Cruise Line
Launching: May 2027
Norwegian Cruise Line will also unveil its largest ship to date in 2027.
Norwegian Aura is scheduled to make its debut in Europe in May, carrying 3,840 guests at double occupancy. Among the headline additions are Ocean Heights, a larger version of Ocean Boulevard and expanded pool and sun deck areas.
The Haven, NCL's private key-card-accessed enclave, will return too.
The ship is currently under construction at Fincantieri in Italy before beginning its first European season.
Viking Astrea, Viking
Launching: June 2027
Viking's ocean fleet grows again in June with Viking Astrea.
The 998-guest ship is under construction at Fincantieri and will begin sailing in the Mediterranean during its inaugural summer season.
Anyone familiar with Viking's existing ocean ships shouldn't expect a dramatic personality transplant. The line has generally preferred evolution over suddenly deciding its next vessel requires a rollercoaster.
Hero of the Seas, Royal Caribbean
Launching: August 2027
Royal Caribbean's Icon Class will get its fourth member in August.
Hero of the Seas is being built at Meyer Turku in Finland and is expected to carry up to 5,610 guests at 250,800 gross tonnes. It will debut from Miami with eight neighbourhoods, record-breaking pools, 28 dining venues and new family accommodation.
The Icon Class has already demonstrated Royal Caribbean's enthusiasm for putting approximately an entire holiday resort on top of a hull.
Hero appears unlikely to represent a sudden minimalist phase.
Oceania Sonata, Oceania Cruises
Launching: August 2027
August also brings an important first for Oceania.
Oceania Sonata will inaugurate the new Sonata Class and is being positioned by the line as its most spacious and amenity-rich ship yet, with the usual emphasis on food, refined accommodation and destination-focused itineraries.
It's currently being built at Fincantieri's Marghera yard in Venice.
Oceania hasn't yet revealed every detail, which makes Sonata one of the 2027 ships worth watching as more information emerges.
MSC World Atlantic, MSC Cruises
Launching: November 2027
MSC's World Class fleet continues to expand with MSC World Atlantic.
The fourth ship in the class is due to launch in November 2027 and will be based year-round at Port Canaveral, operating seven-night Caribbean cruises. Construction is underway at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France.
Expect another very large MSC ship built around the World Class formula, although further details are still to come.
Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, Celebrity River Cruises
Launching: 2027
Possibly the most significant cruise-line expansion of the year involves considerably smaller ships.
Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker will launch Celebrity's new river-cruise operation, taking the brand onto the Rhine and Danube for the first time.
The ships promise particularly large outdoor areas, an infinity-edge plunge pool and eight restaurants and bars. The most eye-catching addition is Magic Edge, a set of cantilevered dining pods extending over the side of the vessel.
Celebrity has spent years making ocean ships look increasingly unlike conventional cruise ships.
It now intends to see what happens when that approach has to fit underneath European bridges.
Disney Believe, Disney Cruise Line
Launching: late 2027
Disney's rapidly growing fleet gets another Wish Class ship towards the end of 2027.
Disney Believe is expected to accommodate up to 4,000 guests and come in at around 144,000 gross tonnes. It will be the fourth ship in the Wish Class.
Further details are currently limited, so expect Disney to reveal considerably more before launch.
Possibly over several announcements accompanied by theatrical lighting.
S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene and S.S. São Rafael, Uniworld
Launching: 2027, dates TBA
Uniworld is adding three new Superships during 2027.
S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene and S.S. São Rafael will sail across the Rhine, Main, Danube and Douro, with expanded suites, more dining venues, custom artwork and the lavish interiors for which Uniworld has become known.
Exact launch dates haven't yet been confirmed.
And given Uniworld's approach to interior design, beige is unlikely to feature prominently in the eventual reveal.
Which new cruise ships should you watch in 2027?
There isn't an obvious single headline launch because 2027's new ships are doing quite different things.
For sheer scale, Hero of the Seas, Carnival Festivale and Norwegian Aura are the ones to watch. Oceania Sonata matters because it introduces an entirely new class, while Amangati brings one of the world's best-known luxury hotel names into cruising.
But some of the most interesting developments are happening on rivers.
Celebrity is entering river cruising for the first time, AmaWaterways is building Europe's largest river cruise vessel, Viking is creating a ship specifically for the Brahmaputra and Uniworld has three new Superships on the way.
Which leaves 2027 offering everything from 80 passengers on an Indian river to more than 6,000 aboard a Carnival megaship.
Calling all of that “cruising” remains technically accurate.
It is becoming an increasingly broad technicality.
Launch dates, specifications and onboard features are based on information announced so far and may change before the ships enter service.
